Philippine Coinage Under United States Administration
( US/Philippine Coins )
This series of Philippine / U.S. coinage needs very little introduction to collectors of US coins because a majority of the issue are US made. This is a unique coinage in that they carry the obverse inscription "FILIPINAS" and the reverse inscription "United States of America". For most part, they were minted in San Francisco, Denver or Philadelphia. The exceptions are the products of a US "branch mint", the only one of its kind, which was established in Manila in 1920.
Although the melting of the silver series has been going on at a hectic pace for the past several years, this series is relatively easy to collect in circulated condition. Choice specimens, especially for the earlier years of issue, can be difficult to find and relatively expensive.
Several issues are listed here for the first time. The 1915-S 10 centavos with an " S " over mintmark is the latest find. Five patterns from the ex King Farouk collection are also listed here for the first time. Because there are no mint reports for the a 10-centavo coin in 1910 and no 1910-S examples are known to exist. I have omitted this previously cataloged issue from this listing. Many counterfeits of the 1910-s 10-centavo coin have appeared on the market and are altered from the 1918-s 10-centavo coins.
The mintmarks on coins struck in the United States are the same as for U.S. coins, i.e. " D " --Denver, " S " --San Francisco and minmarks (" " Blank) -- Philadelphia. The Manila mintmarks in this period continued to be an " M ".

William Howard Taft 1901 - 1904
William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was the 27th President of the United States, First Governor General of the Philippines Colonial Government and later the 10th Chief Justice of the United States.
Born in 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio, into the powerful Taft family, Taft graduated from Yale College in 1878, and from Cincinnati Law School in 1880. Then he worked in a number of local legal positions until being appointed an Ohio Superior Court judge in 1887. In 1890 Taft was appointed Solicitor General of the United States and in 1891 a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1900, President William McKinley appointed Taft Governor-General of the Philippines. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt, then a political ally of Taft, appointed Taft Secretary of War in order to groom Taft as his successor to the presidency. |
