SPANISH - PHILIPPINE COINAGE
Philippine Coins
The Republic of the Philippines, an archipelago in the western Pacific 500 miles (805 km.) from the southeast coast of Asia, has an area of 115,830 sq. mi. (300,000 sq. km.) and a population as of today year 2011 approximately 91,983,000. The Capital is Manila. The economy of the 7,000-island group is based on agriculture, sugar and hemp are exported.
Migration to the Philippines began about 30,000 years ago when land bridges connected the island with Borneo and Sumatra. Ferdinand Magellan claimed the island for Spain in 1521. The first permanent settlement was established by Miguel de Legazpi at Cebu in April of 1565; Manila was established in 1572. A British expedition captured Manila and occupied the Spain by the treaty of Paris, 1763. Spain held the Philippines amid a growing movement of Filipino nationalism until 1898 when they were ceded to the United States at the end of the Spanish - American War. The Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth of the United States in 1935, and attained independence as the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946.
Today, The Philippine coin's without doubt of the demand during the past many years has been great and prices for rare coins have risen sharply, and the prices are herewith reflected. The bi-monthly auctions of the Philippine Numismatic, Bank Notes Society of the Philippines (BNSP), Bayanihan Collectors Club (BCC) and Antiquarian Society in Manila have produced record high for many rare coins, and this is justly so. This is also true with auctions conducted in Spain and the United States.

PHILIP V BARRILLA 1728
VERY RARE (VALUE) : $UNPRICED
Bronze 26mm 5mm thick
Obverse: Inscription around outer edge reads: Barrilla Ano De 1728: (Six pointed star) In center circle in the coat of arms of the City of manila. (England).
Reverse: Blank.
NOTE : Similar to 30mm size. VERY RARE also.
This is the first coin known to have been made in the Philippines.* It had an approximate value of one centavo.
*Several sources have mentioned bronze or copper ingot/coins known as Calderillas , which circulated in the Philippines prior to 1766. They are described as shaped like parallelograms , from three to five millimeters thick , with serrated borders. The available information is sparse and no satisfactorily authenticated specimens are known to have survived. There is , however , a record of an issue of these coins made by order of the Spanish governor at the Cavite naval base in 1766. The purpose in this case was to alleviate a shortage of fractional money which followed the war with England in 1762-64. The circulation of this issue was brief since it was succeeded later in the same year by the round Barrillas of Carlos III.
In the other book edition (Chenby Publishers , 1968) Its mentioned that three specimens of the 1728 Barrilla were known. Since then an other five or six specimens have appeared. Retail prices in Manila have ranged from $350.00 to $950.00. Undoubtedly as more specimens appear on the market , the value may decrease. A number of the coins were found in the Pasig River , Manila , during dredgings.

Isabella II 1833 - 1868
Isabel II Oct. 10, 1830 – Apr. 10, 1904
Isabel II (October 10, 1830 – April 10, 1904), Isabel II in Spanish, was Queen regnant of Spain ("Queen of the Spains" officially from August 13,1836, Isabella II the "queen of Castile, Leon, Aragon,...") She was Spain's first and so far only queen regnant, although she is sometimes considered the third Queen Regnant of Spain, as previous monarchs of Leon and Castile were counted as kings and queens of Spain. Counting the monarchs of Aragon as well, she is the fourth queen regnant of Spain.
Isabella was born in Madrid in 1830, the eldest daughter of Ferdinand VII, king of Spain, and of his fourth wife and niece, Maria Cristina, who was a Neapolitan Bourbon and also a grand-niece of Marie Antoinette. Maria Cristina became queen-regent on September 29, 1833, when her daughter Isabella, at the age of three years, was proclaimed queen on the death of the king.
Isabella succeeded to the throne because Ferdinand VII induced the "Cortes Generales" to help him set aside the Salic law introduced by the Bourbons in the early 18th century, and to re-establish the older succession law of Spain. The first pretender, Ferdinand's brother Carlos, fought seven years, during the minority of Isabella, to dispute her title. His supporters and descendants were known as Carlists and the fight over the succession was the subject of a number of Carlist Wars in the 19th century.

Notes on Octavos and Quartos
Octavos and Quartos minted from 1771 through 1835 include many die varieties, most of them too minor to have been noted in detail by numismatists. No official mint was in operation in Manila at this time. Manufacture of these subsidiary coins was assigned to private Chinese contractors with little technical background and, it would appear, even less knowledge of western alphabets. Their coins were so crudely struck that to a casual observer they almost appear to be counterfeits. Errors, such as inverted letters, abound.
Many of the quartos were struck so weakly that the dates do not appear. The wear from subsequent circulation, of course, helped contribute to this defect, but Gilbert Perez has described the discovery of a hoard of some 80 pieces of the 1828-1830 type. All the coins were in mint condition with full luster, but most of them lacked dates.
Because of these conditions, no attempt is made here to list all the minor varieties. The lack of stress on dates of issue reflects both the large number of undated coins as well as lack of information as to mint records.
Values: Eight octavos or four quartos equaled one real. Eight reals equaled one peso.

COUNTERSTAMPS COIN
The Philippine counterstamped coins
Philippine counterstamped coins or countermarked coins, as they are sometimes called, are probably the most exciting and challenging of all Philippine coins to collect. This field offers endless variety and an excellent opportunity to enjoy the satisfaction which comes with discovering a previously unlisted coin.
I will only list counterstamps by type without attempting to record all the know dates, varieties, or different countries from which the original coins, came. Dr. Pablo i. de Jesus of Manila, one of the foremost authorities on Philippine counterstamped coins, lists nearly 400 different known examples in his "Counterstamped Coins of the Philippines" *
* Philippines Numismatics Monographs, Number 16, Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society, 1966.
"The background of the Philippine counterstamp began about 1810, when separatist movements against Spain started in her colonies in Central and South America. The successes of these revolutions resulted in the independent states of Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and other countries, and which , one by one, struck coins of their own design. As these countries were the main supplies of money used in payment of Oriental goods, more and more of the new coins reached the Philippines from Acapulco. The Spanish authorities in Manila, fearful that the new rebel coinage might imply recognition of the insurgent countries and apprehensive of the effect such coins might produce upon the minds of the Filipinos, decided to remit these coins in such manner as to eliminate any trace of their source, and created an office for this purpose. "
On October 13, 1828, the Captain-General of the Philippines decreed that all coins imported from the newly established Republic of Mexico or other insurgent colonies must be over struck with the following: Obverse : the coat of arms of Spain within the inscription "HABILITADO POR EL REV N.S.D.FERN. VII" (Rehabilitated by the king our Lord Don Ferdinand VII);. and Reverse : the inscription " MANILA" and the year, in two lines. The overstrike had a wide serrated border designed to obliterate any trace of the old design. This failed to work satisfactorily and the serrated border was later abandoned.
The "Manila" overstrike was used for three years, 1828-1830. Only one "Manila" 1829 is known. This appears on a Mexican 8 Escudo gold coin of 1825 now in the collection of the Madrid Mint.
On October 27, 1832, it was decreed that a smaller and simpler die be used, because the "Manila" die proved damaging to the machinery. The new countermark was a circular punch, about 9 to 10 millimeters in diameter, carrying a royal crown embossed in pearls with a cross of pearls on top. Below the crown are the initials F.7o (Ferdinand VII).
After the death of Ferdinand VII on December 20, 1834 the initials, "Y:II" , for Queen Isabella, his daughter and successor, were substituted. The counterstamps were placed on coins in any condition, including badly worn, mutilated, holed or chopmarked specimens.
Counterstamping was halted in Manila by edict on March 31, 1837, after Spain had recognized the independence of Mexico, Peru, Columbia, Bolivia Chile and other former colonies in Central and South America.
Dr. de Jesus has listed the counterstamped coins by rarity factor, a useful approach to a complex subject. The categories, in descending order of rarity are:
1. Counterstamps on gold coins.
2. 1830 "MANILA" overstrikes.
3. Perforated coins countermarked around the hole - especially the "MANILA" overstrikes.
4. Two or more counterstamps on one coin.
5. Countermaked minor coins.
6. Spanish colonial coin, both the bust type and "pillar" dollars.
7. Brazil, U.S. and European crowns.
8. Guatemala and Argentina crowns.
9. 1828 " MANILA" overstrikes.
10. Chile and Columbia crowns.
11. Bolivia.
12. Mexico, 1832-1836. However, the earlier dates are scarce and the Augustinius and hook-necked eagle types are rare.
13. Peru, 1830-1836. Earlier dates are scarce.
For obvious reasons, the F.70. counterstamp does not appear on coins dated later than 1834 and the Y:II counterstamp does not appear on those later than 1837.
Note : Very few specimens of counterstamps on gold coins exist. auction prices have run from $1700 and up. A very rare and unique Y:II counterstamp on a Columbia one escudo, 1827 FM, Popayan mint, is now in posession of the Central Bank Money Museum in Manila.

Alfonso XII 1874 - 1885
Alfonso XII Nov. 28, 1857–Nov. 25, 1885
Alfonso XII (November 28, 1857–November 25, 1885) was king of Spain, reigning from 1875 to 1885, after a "coup d'etat" restored the monarchy and ended the ephemeral First Spanish Republic.
Alfonso was the son of Isabella II of Spain, and allegedly, Francis of Assisi de Borbon, her King Consort. His true biological paternity is uncertain, though his legal paternity is not: his mother was married to her (presumed homosexual) cousin Francis of Assisi de Borbon, the King Consort of Spain, at the time of Alfonso's conception and birth. Some theories suggest that Alfonso's biological father might have been either Enrique Puigmoltó y Mayans, captain of the Royal Guard, or General Francisco Serrano.

Alfonso XIII 1886 - 1931
Alfonso XIII 1886 - 1931
Alfonso XIII (Alfonso León Fernando Maria Jaime Isidro Pascual Antonio de Borbon y Austria-Lorena); when anglicised Alphonse Leon Ferdinand Mary James Isidor Pascal Anthony of Bourbon and Austria-Lorraine (May 17 , 1886 – February 28 , 1941), King of Spain, posthumous son of Alfonso XII of Spain, was proclaimed King at his birth. He reigned from 1886-1931. His mother, Queen Maria Christina, was appointed regent during his minority. In 1902, on attaining his 16th year, the King assumed control of the state.
Although Alfonso's reign would not end well, it began well. The French newspaper Figaro described the young king as "the happiest and best loved of all the rulers of the earth." When he came of age in 1902, the week of his accession to the throne was marked by a week of festivities, bullfights, balls and receptions throughout Spain.
During his reign Spain lost its last colonies in the Americas (Cuba andPuerto Rico) and the Philippines; fought and, after several setbacks, won a war in Morocco; witnessed the start of the Spanish Generation of 1927, and endured the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, which ultimately cost him the throne.

General Emilio Aguinaldo
1st President Emilio Aguinaldo
The First President of the Philippine Republic 1898 - 1901
Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (March 22, 1869 – February 6, 1964) was a Filipino general, politician, and independence leader. He played an instrumental role in Philippine independence during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American War that resisted American occupation. He eventually pledged his allegiance to the US government.
The Pact of Biak-na-Bato, signed in December 14, 1897, created a trucebetween Spanish Colonial Governor-General Fernando Primo de Riveraand Emilio Aguinaldo to end the Philippine Revolution. Aguinaldo and his fellow revolutionaries were given amnesty and monetary indemnity by the Spanish government in return for which the rebel Government would go into voluntary exile in Hong Kong. Aguinaldo would later use the money to purchase firearms.
In the Philippines, Aguinaldo is considered to be the country's first and the youngest Philippine President, though his government failed to obtain any foreign recognition.
